Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging (Image Gently)Statement of PurposeThe Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging is a coalition of health careorganizations dedicated to providing safe, high quality pediatric imaging nationwide.The primary objective of the Alliance is to raise awareness in the imaging community ofthe need to adjust radiation dose when imaging children. The ultimate goal of the Alliance
is to change practice.
The Alliance has chosen to focus first on computed tomography (CT) scans. Thedramatic increase in the number of pediatric CT scans performed in the United States inthe past five years and the rapid evolution, change and availability of CT technology andequipment well justify this Alliance strategy.
Founding MembersThe founding members of the Alliance include the Society of Pediatric Radiology, theAmerican Society of Radiologic Technologists, the American College of Radiology andthe American Association of Physicists in Medicine. The founding members aim to:
• Develop educational resources for radiologists and technologists who performCT scans in children in the United States.• Craft messages to communicate the availability of these educational resourcesusing a wide variety of electronic and print media and through networkingwith Alliance affiliate organizations, vendor partners, health careorganizations, educational institutions and government agencies.• Designate public spokespersons from the founding member organizations topresent unified messages to the media and the public.Affiliate OrganizationsThe founding members of the Alliance are joined in these efforts by affiliateorganizations. Affiliates invited to join the Alliance show support by agreeing to:• Endorse the primary objective of raising awareness in the imagingcommunity of the need to adjust radiation dose when imaging children andthe ultimate goal of changing practice.• Communicate Alliance messages through their organizations’ electronicand print media on specified release dates.• Communicate the Alliance’s goals to their members and constituentsthrough mail, email, conferences, and meetings• Contribute to the body of knowledge contained on the Alliance Web site.• Refer questions and media queries to the designated public spokespersonsfrom the founding member organizations.
